The Criminal Courts Of The Metropolitan New York Area
There are many criminal courts throughout the metropolitan New York area. There is at least one and very often more than one criminal court in each and every county. The counties in the metropolitan New York area include the five Boroughs of the city of New York, the Bronx, Kings, Queens, Richmond, and a New York County. On Long Island, the county’s are Nassau and Suffolk County. North of the city is Westchester County. Our law office practices law and represents individuals charged with criminal matters in all of these counties. The criminal courts located in the metropolitan New York area deal with all types of criminal cases. They handle cases from the arrest through either a disposition or trial.
Criminal cases are started by either an individual being arrested and incarcerated or receiving a desk appearance ticket to appear in court. There are two types of criminal matters in the State of New York, misdemeanors which involve crimes punishable up to one year in jail and felonies which involve crimes punishable by more than one year in jail. Misdemeanors have two gradations, “A” misdemeanors and “B” misdemeanors. Felonies have many gradations such as “A” felonies, “B” felonies, “C” “D” and “E”, etc. “A” misdemeanors and “A” felonies are the most serious of the crimes. As you go down the alphabet the crimes become less serious and the penalties are reduced.
Felony Cases
On Long Island, felony cases are handled in the County Courts of Nassau and Suffolk County and in the City of New York they are handled in the Supreme Court.
Federal Cases
The Federal Courts have their own system which is separate and apart from the court system of the State of New York. Individuals charged with Federal crimes appear in Federal courts which are also located throughout the metropolitan New York area.
The criminal law attorneys that the Law Offices of Schlissel DeCorpo handle all types of criminal matters throughout the five boroughs of the City of New York, Nassau and Suffolk Counties on Long Island as well as Westchester County. For your convenience, we have put together a list of all the courts in the metropolitan New York area, their addresses, their phone numbers, directions to get to them and parking information. We hope this is of help to you.
